Imagine you’ve lost a tooth. Maybe it fell out, or maybe it had to be removed because it was damaged or decayed. Now, there’s an empty space in your mouth where that tooth used to be. A dental implant is like a replacement for that missing tooth, but it’s a bit more than just a fake tooth.
A dental implant is a strong, long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth. It involves placing a titanium or zirconia post in your jawbone, adding a connector, and then topping it with a realistic-looking crown. The final result is a natural-looking, fully functional tooth that blends seamlessly with your existing teeth.
Dental implants are the gold standard of tooth replacement due to their:
- Natural Look and Feel: Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. Because they fuse with the bone, they become permanent and stable when cared for properly.
- Durability: Implants are very durable and, with proper care, can last many years, often a lifetime.
- Improved Comfort and Function: Unlike dentures, which can sometimes slip and cause discomfort, implants are fixed in place, making them more comfortable and allowing you to eat and speak without worry.

Initial Consultation
- Comprehensive Examination: During your first visit, Dr. Little will conduct a thorough examination of your mouth, including X-rays and 3D imaging, to assess your oral health and determine the best implant solution for you.
- Personalized Treatment Plan: We will discuss your dental history, goals, and any concerns you may have. Based on this information, we will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and desires.
Preparation
- Pre-Surgical Preparation: If necessary, preparatory treatments such as tooth extractions or bone grafting will be scheduled to ensure your mouth is healthy and ready for the implant.
- Detailed Explanation: Our team will explain the entire implant process, answer any questions, and provide pre-surgery instructions to ensure you are fully prepared and comfortable.
Implant Surgery
- Comfort and Care: On the day of the surgery, we ensure your comfort with local anesthesia or sedation options which we offer in many levels, depending on your preference and the complexity of the procedure.
- Precise Placement: Using advanced technology such as our 3D Xray, Dr. Little will precisely place the implant into your jawbone. This implant serves as a sturdy foundation for the replacement tooth.
Healing and Recovery
- Healing Period: After the implant is placed, a healing period of several months is typically needed for the implant to fuse with the jawbone (osseointegration). During this time, we provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions and schedule regular checkups at our Portland dental office to monitor your progress.
Restoration
- Abutment Placement: Once the implant has successfully integrated with your jawbone, an abutment (a connector piece between the implant and the crown) is attached to the implant. This step may involve a minor procedure, and it serves as the base for your new tooth.
- Custom Crown: Impressions of your mouth are taken to create a custom-made crown that matches your natural teeth in color, shape, and size. We are thankful to have a lab in-house to ensure prompt delivery, customization, and accuracy. Once ready, the crown is securely attached to the abutment.
Ongoing Care
In order to ensure the best possible outcome, Dr. Little and our team recommend regular checkups in the office with Dr. Little to monitor healing. Brush twice a day, floss every day with floss or a water flosser, and protect against teeth grinding with a nightguard that we can 3D print using our 3D printer, right here at Fear Free Dental.
